The American Heart Association (AHA) is dedicated to being a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives. Our customers, which include individuals, families, healthcare professionals, and communities, face the devastating impact of cardiovascular diseases and stroke – the No. 1 and No. 2 killers worldwide. These conditions not only lead to premature death but also cause significant disability and diminish the quality of life for millions. Recognizing this critical challenge, the AHA was founded in 1924 by six cardiologists who envisioned a future where scientific research could pave the way for better treatment, prevention, and ultimately, a cure for heart disease. Before the AHA, individuals with heart disease were often consigned to complete bed rest with little hope for recovery. Our founders believed this didn't have to be the reality.

For nearly a century, the American Heart Association has been at the forefront of fighting heart disease and stroke, striving to save and improve lives. We understand that every person deserves the opportunity for a full, healthy life. To achieve this, we focus on several key areas. We are a leading non-profit funder of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular research, having invested over $5.9 billion to accelerate scientific discoveries and drive innovation. This commitment to research has played a major role in significant health advancements, including the dramatic reduction in death rates from heart disease and stroke. We also provide critical tools, information, and education to the public and healthcare providers. This includes publishing science-based treatment guidelines, offering CPR education and training to millions annually, and raising awareness through campaigns like Go Red for Women®, which empowers women to take charge of their heart health. Furthermore, we advocate for stronger public health policies at local, state, and federal levels to create healthier communities and ensure equitable access to quality healthcare. Our work is powered by the dedication of over 35 million volunteers and supporters, and more than 2,900 employees, all united by a shared focus on cardiovascular health.
