Altarum is pleased to announce an opening for a Communications Analyst to work in the Division of Population Health. This position is critical to the implementation and execution of the several national public health initiatives, including the National Coalition for Sexual Health, MCH Workforce Performance Center, SAMHSA Technical Assistance project, and the Early Childhood System Technical Assistance Center. The Communications Analyst responsibilities will include coordinating communications output from the various projects—creating resources and social media content, supporting webinars and virtual meetings, and designing publications.
Our ideal candidate has experience working in a fast-paced, challenging, and intellectually engaging environment, interacting with thought leaders from multiple disciplines, and developing content and messaging strategies.  Creative thinking and excellent writing skills, particularly for public audiences, are required.
During your career at Altarum as a Communications Analyst, you’ll have an opportunity to support a variety of other Population Health projects, shape the overall communications strategy for projects, and participate in activities to promote expansion of effective interventions to states and with federal partners. You’ll work with a passionate, innovative team of public health professionals, analysts, and researchers.

Responsibilities

  • Model the values of the organization.
  • Plan and develop public health social media campaigns; write and edit content for social media, engage with followers across different channels, track SEO and web traffic metrics.
  • Write and edit content for digital tools, and publications that support client goals and Population Health initiatives and messaging.
  • Develop public health messages, materials, and activities. Could include website content, social media materials, promotional materials, and facilitation of video projects.
  • Coordinate related advisory groups tasked with providing valuable insights and perspectives on activities. Foster a collaborate and inclusive environment that empowers advisory group members to contribute meaningfully to the development of public health materials
  • Work with colleagues to develop and edit content for submittals and coordinating submittals to publications.
  • Prepare content and materials for external meetings and speaking engagements (e.g., research briefings, speeches, PowerPoint presentations, talking points, etc.).
  • Complete and comply with federal plain language guidelines for work products, e.g., accessibility checklists.
  • Ensure products are Section 508-compliant as required.
  • Support virtual and in-person meetings and events on Zoom or Microsoft Teams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in health communications, journalism, English, or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in media relations, journalism, health communications, or related field. Experience working within the sexual and reproductive, maternal and child, and behavioral health field strongly preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with demonstrated creativity, particularly for public audiences; experience developing culturally responsive and multicultural communications content preferred.
  • Experience in creating social media strategies; knowledge of best practices for social media platforms such as Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.
  • Experience designing communications products with and for diverse populations (e.g., young people, LGBTQ+ community, different cultural groups, Medicaid recipients) preferred.
  • Experience in sexual health and/or behavioral health communications is a plus
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to positively represent Altarum and its mission.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to effectively manage multiple projects while staying on schedule.
  • Ability to work independently, but flexible enough to also work as part of a large team.
  • Ability to learn new computer programs easily: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe Suite, e.g., InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, Dreamweaver(design publications for print or digital), WordPress, Drupal (website content updates), Social media platforms, e.g., TikTok & Reels, and LinkedIn (administration and reporting), Adobe Dreamweaver (basic HTML and CSS), Articulate Storyline (create e-learning modules), Canva
  • Experience copyediting.
  • Understanding of Section 508 compliance and basic accessibility guidelines (a plus) and willingness to learn on the job.
  • Self-starter; able to work and collaborate effectively within a fast-paced environment.
