About the Role
We’re looking for a Market & User Researcher to help us uncover insights that shape our marketing, product development, and business strategy. This part-time, remote consulting role is ideal for someone experienced in both traditional research methods and modern, AI-assisted approaches to large-scale qualitative analysis.
You’ll design and execute surveys, conduct user interviews and focus groups, and collaborate with product teams to test and refine ideas. You’ll also play a critical role in upcoming projects that involve using large language models (LLMs) to synthesize anonymized user message data at scale and identify emergent behavior patterns across user segments.
What You'll Do
  • Survey Development & Analysis – Design, distribute, and analyze surveys to capture key insights about our users and market.
  • User Interviews & Focus Groups – Plan, recruit, and conduct interviews and focus groups to uncover needs, pain points, and motivations.
  • Prototyping & Usability Testing – Collaborate with product and design teams to test concepts, run usability studies, and validate product and positioning ideas.
  • Script & Guide Writing – Develop structured interview guides, survey questions, usability test scripts, and discussion frameworks.
  • Data Synthesis & Reporting – Analyze qualitative and quantitative data to identify patterns and communicate findings in clear, actionable ways.
  • Market & Competitive Analysis – Track industry trends, competitor moves, and emerging behaviors to inform business and product strategy.
  • AI-Powered Text Analysis – Use LLMs (e.g., GPT-4, Claude, etc.) and prompt engineering to tag, cluster, and summarize large volumes of anonymized user text data for segment analysis.
  • Codebook Development & Iteration – Develop and refine use case taxonomies and tagging rubrics to train LLMs and maintain consistency across datasets.
  • Cross-Team Collaboration – Work closely with marketing, product, data, and design teams to ensure insights are embedded into roadmaps and communications.
What We're Looking For
  • 3+ years of experience in market research, user research, UX research, or a related role
  • Strong skills in qualitative and quantitative research: survey design, interview facilitation, usability testing, and analysis
  • Experience using research platforms (e.g., SurveyMonkey, Qualtrics, Typeform) and usability tools (e.g., Figma, Lyssna)
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize complex data into clear, actionable recommendations
  • Comfort with large datasets and emerging AI tools—especially LLM-based classification, synthesis, or tagging of qualitative feedback at scale
  • Excellent communication skills—you're just as comfortable engaging users as you are presenting findings to leadership
  • Bonus: Experience working in a SaaS, privacy, or telecommunications environment
Why You'll Love It Here
  • The opportunity to shape product, marketing, and strategy through deep customer insights
  • Direct impact on cutting-edge research involving LLMs and privacy-safe qualitative analysis
  • Flexible, remote work (~10–20 hours per week)
  • Competitive part-time compensation with potential for extended work

What began as a creative reaction to the seismic shifts in the mobile landscape of the early 2010s has blossomed into Ad Hoc Labs, a company dedicated to making mobile communication more intuitive, private, and user-centric. Founded by Will Carter and Greg Cohn, the journey started with the launch of their flagship app, Burner. Carter and Cohn saw a burgeoning opportunity to develop applications that were not just technologically interesting, but also solved tangible, everyday problems for people navigating an increasingly connected world. They envisioned tools that would empower users, giving them control over their digital footprint and personal privacy. This vision was the seed from which Burner grew, an application designed to provide temporary, disposable phone numbers, allowing users to protect their primary contact information. The concept resonated deeply with a growing public concern for privacy in the digital age.

The success of Burner, which has been downloaded by nearly 10 million users, propelled Ad Hoc Labs forward, solidifying its mission to build software that makes your phone a better, smarter device. The company's narrative is one of steady innovation, expanding its portfolio to include other privacy-focused communication apps like Firewall and Dialed. Firewall was developed to combat the rising tide of spam calls, giving users the power to whitelist contacts and block unwanted intrusions. Dialed caters to the needs of small business owners and entrepreneurs, offering a dedicated business line with marketing and productivity tools, all from a single app. This evolution from a single, clever utility to a suite of communication solutions demonstrates a deep understanding of user needs and a commitment to creating a more socially aware and privacy-oriented mobile experience. Backed by premier technology investors like Venrock and Founder Collective, Ad Hoc Labs continues its journey, driven by a passionate team that believes in the fundamental right to communicate freely and safely.
