Robert Griffin
@robertgriffin
Experienced protein biochemist specialising in protein purification and structural biology for drug discovery.
What I'm looking for
I am an experienced protein biochemist and research scientist with a strong background in protein purification, structural biology and drug-discovery projects. Over a career spanning roles at UCB Pharma, GlaxoSmithKline, Replizyme and Smith & Nephew, I have specialised in AKTA-based purifications, protein characterisation and preparing samples for structural techniques.
I hold an MSc in Structural Molecular Biology (Distinction) and a BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry, and I have applied molecular biology and biochemical techniques across enzyme assay development, monoclonal antibody process development, and target-focused screening projects. I routinely use chromatography, electrophoresis, mass spectrometry and NMR/crystallography sample preparation in lab-based discovery settings.
I am a collaborative team member who presents results at project and departmental meetings, keeps rigorous laboratory records, and brings hands-on experience across expression systems (E. coli and mammalian), biophysical characterisation and mass spectrometry to roles focused on discovering therapeutics for immune and central nervous system diseases.
Experience
Work history, roles, and key accomplishments
Research Scientist
UCB Pharma
Jul 2005 - Apr 2023 (17 years 9 months)
Performed lab-based protein biochemistry and purification to support drug discovery projects for immune and central nervous system diseases, contributing to multiple project teams and supporting structural biology efforts.
Developed techniques to study protein phosphorylation and supported routine mass spectrometry and protein sequencing workflows for research projects.
Conducted small-scale purification of monoclonal antibodies for process development using AKTA systems and various chromatography modalities.
Scientist
Replizyme Ltd
Oct 2002 - Jan 2004 (1 year 3 months)
Worked on enzyme assay development and produced mammalian DNA polymerases in E. coli to support drug screening and counter-screening against polymerase targets.
Developed and tested protein-based wound-healing gel prototypes, performing protein quantification assays (BCA, collagen assays, ELISAs) to support product development.
Biochemical Analyst
Avecia Biotechnology
Jun 2001 - Sep 2001 (3 months)
Analyzed proteins including PEGylated antibody fragments to support biomanufacturing and analytical development activities.
