Certified Peer Specialist/Mental Health Recovery
Nicole Harber
@nicoleharber
Hope and compassion are two core values that drive my mental health recovery and helps me serve others with lived experience.
What I'm looking for
I have been certified as a peer specialist since 2010. When I was able to become licensed as a CPS in 2019, I gained my licensure and have maintained all my continuing education to date.
I’ve worked in a variety of settings including residential, mobile and drop in centers. I work well both with individuals and groups.
I utilize motivational interviewing, mutual support, story telling, social skills building, psychoeducation, relapse prevention, activities, active listening and crisis intervention.
I find it unique how peer support can sometimes be utilized as a diversion from hospitalization. The power of shared lived experience is phenomenal and life changing. I worked for a company that statistically calculated our diversion rate.
A strengths based approach and being goal driven is monumental to whole health recovery. I have used this in my personal life and in my professional roles. It has helped people move forward on their self-directed paths. I have watched many peers achieve things that they thought at one time were impossible. New apartments, jobs, improved mental health, healthier relationships and so forth. Like the old saying goes, keep your eye on the prize. Work for what you want. If you take two steps backwards, pick yourself back up and begin to move forward again. It has been incredible watching success stories and the fruit of my peers labor pay off.
I love creativity and built a successful peer support group called Connect 4 Success. This group utilized a hands on approach through various things including games to promote whole health recovery. Feedback from group members have been that it provides a fun interactive approach that incorporates learning and mutual support.
I am devoted to peer support and I want to be able to utilize my skills to the fullest and be a hope seller through compassion and active listening.
Overall, I believe that the bond of mutual support is held by connection and conversation. The more I engage with peers, the more of the fruits of recovery come alive to bring vital life to overall wellness in all domains of whole health recovery.
