Dan Weston
@danweston
Eng.D. student specializing in numerical modeling and optimization.
What I'm looking for
I am currently an Eng.D. student at Johnson Matthey, where I focus on experimental and numerical studies related to submersible bead mills. My research involves developing predictive models that optimize manufacturing processes, significantly enhancing product quality and efficiency. I have also contributed to a post-processing library that streamlines data processing for researchers, promoting a collaborative and open approach to scientific inquiry.
Previously, I interned at the University of Birmingham, where I created digital twins of laboratory equipment, enriching the student learning experience. My role as an Oral Solid Dose Technologist at GlaxoSmithKline allowed me to lead development trials for continuous tablet manufacturing, where I successfully implemented process improvements that reduced material waste while maintaining product quality. My diverse experiences have equipped me with a robust skill set in numerical and statistical modeling, as well as a strong foundation in chemical engineering.
Experience
Work history, roles, and key accomplishments
Eng.D. Student
Johnson Matthey
Oct 2020 - Present (4 years 8 months)
As an Eng.D. student, I developed predictive models for mill energy use and product size to optimize manufacturing. I created workflows for estimating multiphase mill model parameters using experimental data and contributed to a post-processing library for particle data.
Chemical Engineering Summer Intern
University of Birmingham
Jul 2019 - Sep 2019 (2 months)
During my internship, I created digital twins of laboratory equipment for undergraduates and developed web apps to showcase physical phenomena, enhancing student engagement and outreach for the chemical engineering department.
Oral Solid Dose Technologist
GlaxoSmithKline
Jul 2017 - Jun 2018 (11 months)
I led development trials for a continuous tablet manufacturing line, confirming mechanical modifications reduced tablet defects. I implemented process changes to minimize rejected material while maintaining quality attributes and coordinated complex batch executions.
