Bhairavi Swaminathan
@bhairaviswaminathan
I build genomic and transcriptomic analyses that reveal disease and drug mechanisms.
What I'm looking for
At DiamondAge Data Science, I analyze mouse spatial transcriptomics data from Visium and Xenium to identify brain regions with differential expression in disease versus drug conditions.
Previously at the University of Illinois at Chicago, I built and optimized R and UNIX pipelines for bulk RNA-seq, single-cell RNA-seq, genomics, and integrated omics analysis. I turned raw and public data from TCGA, GTEx, and GEO into inferential reports and visualizations that connected gene expression, mutations, clinical outcomes, and signaling mechanisms.
My work spans cardiovascular, oncology, immunology, and neuroscience research, including GWAS, eQTL, functional genomics, and drug-mechanism studies. I have led studies from hypothesis generation through publication and contributed to more than 10 papers, including work in Nature Genetics and Nature Communications.
I bring hands-on experience with R, Python, UNIX, HPC, AWS, spatial transcriptomics, and multi-omic data analysis, alongside a Ph.D. in Human Genetics. I’m motivated by discoveries that connect the transcriptome, genome, and clinical phenome to disease mechanisms, drug targets, and biomarkers.

Computational Biologist
University of Illinois at Chicago
Dec 2020 - Aug 2025 (4 years 8 months)
Generated and optimized scripts to process raw and public data (TCGA, GTEx, GEO) for inferential reports and visualizations. Translated statistical findings into biological insights using pathway analysis and integrated omics with clinical outcomes.
Fine-mapped GWAS loci to identify causal variants and credible sets using FineMap. Processed UK Biobank GWAS datasets using R-based tools and scripts.
Bioinformatic Staff Scientist
University of Illinois at Chicago
Nov 2016 - Dec 2020 (4 years 1 month)
Optimized pipelines for transcriptomic screens including time course, overexpression, inhibition, knockout, and drug dose experiments. Developed Unix and R based pipelines for bulk RNAseq, RiboTag, and single-cell RNAseq with QC, integration, and statistical analysis.
Human Geneticist / Postdoctoral Research Scientist
Lund University
Oct 2013 - Oct 2016 (3 years)
Performed GWAS data analysis, functional genomic follow-up, and candidate gene studies. Elucidated disease mechanisms using cell and molecular biology methods including CRISPR, EMSA, and luciferase assays.
Ph.D. (cum laude), Marie Curie Scholar, Human Genetics
University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU)
Mar 2009 - Aug 2012 (3 years 5 months)
Led publications identifying gene markers correlated with phenotype and elucidating mechanisms in disease progression. Optimized lab protocols for nucleic acid isolation, primer design, PCR, genotyping, and gene expression analysis.
Molecular Geneticist
National Institute of Biological Sciences (NCBS) & NIMHANS
