Baraka Nshola
@barakanshola
Civil engineering graduate researcher at Johns Hopkins modelling urban transportation networks and bridge infrastructure.
What I'm looking for
At Johns Hopkins University, I contribute to modelling urban transportation networks and their interaction with bridge and pavement infrastructure using MATLAB and Python. I also assist with finite element analysis of structural components and prepare technical reports and conference abstracts.
My research experience includes supporting work on sustainable construction materials and pavement performance at UCLA, using data collection, statistical analysis, and visualization. I’ve also assisted with road design checks and site inspections at Los Angeles City Department of Public Works, and supported structural design teams at Baltimore Infrastructure & Design Group.
Experience
Work history, roles, and key accomplishments
Contribute to modelling and simulation of urban transportation networks and their interaction with bridge and pavement infrastructure using MATLAB and Python. Assist in finite element analysis of structural components and preparation of technical reports and conference abstracts.
Lead tutorials and problem-solving sessions in statics, mechanics of materials, and introductory structural analysis for undergraduate civil engineering students. Support laboratory classes on materials testing, data acquisition, and reporting, emphasizing experimental methods and safety protocols.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Sep 2023 - May 2025 (1 year 8 months)
Supported research on sustainable construction materials and pavement performance, including data collection, statistical analysis, and visualization. Co-authored posters and abstracts presented at university and regional engineering symposiums.
Junior Civil Engineering Intern
Los Angeles City Department of Public Works
Jun 2024 - Aug 2024 (2 months)
Assisted in geometric design checks for urban roads, reviewing alignment, cross-sections, and signage against relevant standards. Participated in site inspections, documenting pavement condition, traffic flow, and safety issues to support maintenance and rehabilitation planning.
Civil Engineering Intern
Baltimore Infrastructure & Design Group
Jun 2023 - Aug 2023 (2 months)
Supported structural design teams with calculations, drawings review, and quantity take-offs for small building and bridge projects. Prepared technical notes, organized project documentation, and attended coordination meetings with architects, contractors, and municipal officials.
