Arif Chu
@arifchu
Physics researcher at USC modeling dark matter and supernovae, with a PyTorch transient classifier that achieved 98% accuracy.
What I'm looking for
At the University of Southern California, I researched interacting dark matter models and Type II supernovae. I constrained possible dark matter microphysics using observational constraints and produced N-body simulations for velocity-dependent dark matter models.
Alongside Anthony Piro, I used SNEC to model early-time emission from core-collapse supernova progenitors. I constructed controlled model grids to distinguish shock breakout and shock-cooling emission from later radioactive nickel heating.
For Vera C. Rubin data research, I prepared data and developed a PyTorch transient classifier that achieved 98% accuracy, earning the 2022 DiRAC Summer Research Prize. I also worked on gravitational-wave follow-up planning through the Gravitational Wave Treasure Map API.
At CENPA, I fabricated and maintained research lab equipment and conducted a Rutherford backscattering experiment for detector characterization. I’ve also worked with particle accelerator operations, mentored students in machine learning research, and taught astronomy sections at USC.
Experience
Work history, roles, and key accomplishments
Used SNEC radiation-hydrodynamics code to model early-time emission from core-collapse supernova progenitors, aiming to separate shock breakout from radioactive nickel heating.
Constrained interacting dark matter models using N-body simulations and prepared initial conditions for velocity-dependent dark matter constraints.
