Adam Smith

Co-directs and leads the Spiritual Wellness Department in Tucson, and contributes to the Health and Performance leadership team. Manages three direct reports while delivering spiritual wellness services to guests.

Provided individual spiritual consultations and facilitated inspiring presentations and group workshops for guests in an evidence-based, integrative health environment. Developed program materials based on current research and contributed to new program development.

Developed and taught BS courses on spirituality and chaplaincy, and ethical issues in the helping professions. Delivered course instruction aligned with learning objectives for undergraduate students.

Assessed spiritual needs of patients and families and provided spiritual counseling or referrals aligned with faith traditions and beliefs. Supported memorial and funeral preparation, including planning and officiating.

Assisted with compiling a spiritual plan of care for patients and families based on responses to dying. Provided direct spiritual counsel, prayer, and ministry, and documented spiritual interventions in patient records.

Counseled bereaved individuals of hospice patients and facilitated grief groups to support recovery and coping. Developed individualized care plans for grief-related issues and provided grief education to hospice staff and volunteers.

Provided direct spiritual care for patients and families as part of an interdisciplinary team. Assessed spiritual concerns, formulated individualized spiritual care plans, and conducted memorial services.

Provided pastoral care to patients, families, and hospital staff. Led weekly spirituality groups at Marshall I. Pickens Psychiatric Hospital and conducted weekly interfaith/multifaith services in the hospital chapel.

Served as a full-time pastoral care department team member and organized prayer and meditation services in creative, ecumenical ways. Built positive working relationships across the interdisciplinary health team.

Supported high-school students with Autism Spectrum Disorder with daily living skills and behavioral reinforcement aligned to therapy goals. Assisted the teacher with instruction and provided academic and medically relevant support for students with disabilities.

Completed an MA in Pastoral Care at Fordham University’s Graduate School of Religion, graduating May 2013, supported by an academic scholarship (Church-Worker Scholar).

Completed Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at Greenville Health System/University Medical Center, finishing a 3.5-unit residency in August 2013.

Completed Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta, finishing a 1-unit internship in August 2012.

Earned a BA in Journalism from the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, graduating December 2008, supported by an academic scholarship (HOPE Scholar).
