Role Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced Chief Tugboat Captain to lead our operations in navigating vessels safely within harbors, canals, and along coastal waters. As the Chief Tugboat Captain, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of tugboats, overseeing all aspects of navigation, vessel handling, and crew management to ensure adherence to safety regulations and operational standards.
Responsibilities
- Command tugboats to assist in maneuvering larger vessels during docking and undocking operations, ensuring optimal safety and efficiency
- Supervise and mentor crew members, fostering a culture of teamwork and professional development
- Conduct risk assessments and ensure compliance with maritime regulations and safety protocols
- Coordinate with port authorities and other marine operators to optimize vessel movements and logistics
- Oversee routine maintenance of tugboats, ensuring vessels are in optimal condition for operations
- Develop and implement operational procedures and training programs to enhance crew performance and safety
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- Minimum of 10 years of experience working on tugboats, with at least 5 years in a leadership role
- Valid Coast Guard Master’s License and other relevant maritime certifications
- Extensive knowledge of maritime navigational practices and regulations
- Demonstrated ability to operate tugboats and manage complex vessel maneuvers
Preferred:
- Experience with various types of tugboats and marine vessels
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead diverse teams
- Understanding of environmental regulations and best practices in marine operations
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Proficiency in navigational systems and technologies, including radar, GPS, and electronic chart systems
- Familiarity with tugboat engines, propulsion systems, and maintenance practices
- Experience with vessel traffic management systems and maritime communication protocols
