Role Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and passionate Assistant Textile Conservator to join our conservation team. In this role, you will support the preservation and restoration of textile collections by applying your expertise in conservation techniques and methodologies. Your work will ensure that our invaluable textile artifacts are maintained for future generations to appreciate and study.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the assessment, documentation, and treatment of textile artifacts, ensuring preservation standards are met.
- Conduct cleaning, stabilization, and repair of textiles using appropriate conservation methods and materials.
- Collaborate with senior conservators to develop treatment plans and conservation strategies for complex textile pieces.
- Participate in research projects related to textile conservation and contribute to knowledge-sharing within the team.
- Maintain accurate records of all conservation activities, including photographic documentation and treatment reports.
- Ensure the proper handling, storage, and display of textile collections in accordance with best practices.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in textile conservation, art conservation, or a related field.
- At least 1 year of practical experience in textile conservation, including internships or volunteer work.
- Strong understanding of textile materials, construction techniques, and conservation ethics.
Preferred:
- Master's degree in textile conservation or a related discipline.
- Experience with a variety of textile treatments, including dyeing, weaving, and stitching.
- Familiarity with conservation documentation standards and software.
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Proficiency in textile conservation tools and techniques, including stitching and dyeing methods.
- Experience with conservation-grade materials and their applications.
- Knowledge of environmental monitoring techniques for textile preservation.
