Role Overview
As the Head of Paper Conservation, you will lead our dedicated conservation team in preserving, restoring, and caring for our extensive collection of paper artifacts. This strategic role combines hands-on conservation work with leadership responsibilities, driving innovation in preservation techniques while ensuring the highest standards of care for our collections.
Responsibilities
- Oversee all aspects of paper conservation, including treatment, preservation, and assessment of artifacts.
- Develop and implement conservation strategies that prioritize the longevity and integrity of paper collections.
- Lead a team of conservators, providing mentorship and fostering an environment of continuous learning and professional development.
- Collaborate with curatorial and exhibition teams to ensure conservation standards are met for public display and loan agreements.
- Conduct research on new conservation methods and technologies, integrating findings into existing practices.
- Manage conservation budgets, timelines, and project planning to ensure efficient use of resources.
- Communicate conservation needs and outcomes to stakeholders and the broader community through reports and presentations.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- Master's degree in Conservation, Art History, or related field.
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in paper conservation, including significant leadership experience.
- Demonstrated expertise in a range of conservation techniques and methodologies.
- Strong understanding of preservation standards and ethical considerations in conservation.
Preferred:
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals related to conservation practices.
- Experience with digital preservation techniques and technology.
- Active membership in professional conservation organizations.
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Proficient in conservation treatment methodologies for various paper types, including manuscripts, prints, and maps.
- Familiarity with analytical techniques such as microscopy, spectroscopy, and imaging technologies.
- Experience with collection management software and databases.
