Role Overview
We are seeking a visionary Head of Conservation specializing in ethnographic materials to lead our conservation team. This role is critical in preserving the integrity and cultural significance of ethnographic collections, ensuring they are available for future generations. You will be responsible for developing and implementing conservation strategies that align with our organizational goals, while also fostering innovation and collaboration across departments.
Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership:
- Develop and execute a comprehensive conservation strategy for ethnographic materials that aligns with institutional objectives and best practices.
- Lead and mentor a team of conservators, fostering a culture of excellence and professional development.
- Collaborate with curatorial, exhibition, and education teams to ensure that conservation practices support interpretive goals and public engagement.
Conservation Practice:
- Oversee the assessment, documentation, and treatment of ethnographic artifacts, utilizing advanced conservation techniques.
- Ensure compliance with ethical and professional standards in conservation, while advocating for the needs and perspectives of diverse cultures represented in the collections.
- Implement preventive conservation measures to mitigate deterioration and enhance the longevity of collections.
Research and Development:
- Conduct and promote research on conservation methodologies specific to ethnographic materials, contributing to the field's knowledge base.
- Stay updated on emerging trends and technologies in conservation, integrating relevant innovations into practice.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- Master's degree in conservation, museum studies, anthropology, or a related field.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in conservation, with a focus on ethnographic materials and cultural heritage.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and experience managing a team of conservators.
Preferred:
- Ph.D. in a relevant field.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities and cultural stakeholders to ensure culturally sensitive conservation practices.
- Publication record in conservation science or ethnographic preservation.
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Expertise in diagnostic techniques and conservation treatments specific to ethnographic materials.
- Proficiency in the use of conservation-related software for documentation and management of collections.
- Knowledge of environmental monitoring tools and preventive conservation strategies.
Soft Skills and Cultural Fit
