Role Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented Assistant Ethnographic Materials Conservator to join our dedicated conservation team. In this role, you will play a vital part in preserving and maintaining our unique collection of ethnographic materials, ensuring that these artifacts are protected for future generations. Your expertise will be crucial in the assessment, treatment, and preventive care of these culturally significant objects.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the examination and documentation of ethnographic materials to determine their condition and conservation needs.
- Support the implementation of conservation treatments, including cleaning, stabilizing, and repairing artifacts while adhering to ethical guidelines.
- Participate in the development and execution of preventive conservation strategies to minimize deterioration and ensure the longevity of collections.
- Collaborate with curatorial staff to provide conservation assessments and recommendations for exhibitions and loans.
- Engage in research related to conservation techniques and materials, contributing to the ongoing development of best practices in the field.
- Contribute to the organization and maintenance of the conservation lab, ensuring a safe and efficient workspace.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Conservation, Museum Studies, Anthropology, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience in conservation practices, particularly with ethnographic materials.
- Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
Preferred:
- Master's degree in Conservation or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Familiarity with a range of conservation techniques and materials used in the preservation of ethnographic objects.
- Experience in a museum or cultural heritage institution.
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Proficiency in conservation documentation tools and methods.
- Experience with digital imaging and cataloging software.
- Knowledge of materials science as it relates to conservation practices.
