Role Overview
We're seeking a strategic and experienced Director of Technical Documentation to lead our documentation team at [$COMPANY_NAME]. In this fully remote role, you will be responsible for defining and executing the vision for technical documentation, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and accessibility of our product information for both internal stakeholders and external users. Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor a team of technical writers, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement in documentation practices.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive documentation strategy that aligns with product development and user needs.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, product management, and customer support, to gather information and produce high-quality documentation.
- Establish and maintain documentation standards, style guides, and best practices to ensure consistency across all technical content.
- Oversee the creation of various documentation types, including user guides, API documentation, release notes, and training materials.
- Utilize analytics and user feedback to iterate on documentation content and improve user understanding and engagement.
- Manage documentation projects and timelines, ensuring timely delivery of all documentation assets.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- 10+ years of experience in technical writing or documentation management, with a proven track record in leading documentation teams.
- Strong understanding of technical concepts and the ability to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner.
- Proficiency in documentation tools such as MadCap Flare, Adobe FrameMaker, or similar.
- Experience with version control systems and collaborative documentation platforms (e.g., Confluence, Git).
- Exceptional project management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Preferred:
- Experience in software development or engineering environments.
- Familiarity with Agile methodologies and the software development lifecycle.
- Knowledge of UX design principles and user-centered documentation strategies.
- Advanced degree in a relevant field (e.g., Technical Communication, English, or Engineering).
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Expertise in creating and managing online help systems and documentation portals.
- Proficiency in markup languages (e.g., Markdown, HTML) and content management systems.
- Experience with API documentation tools such as Swagger or Postman.
