Role Overview
As the Chief State Archivist, you will lead the strategic direction and management of state archival programs, ensuring the preservation, accessibility, and utilization of public records that document the history and culture of our state. You will be responsible for developing innovative archival practices and technologies that enhance public engagement and education while collaborating with various stakeholders to promote the importance of archival resources.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the operations of the state archives, including acquisition, preservation, and access to public records
- Develop and implement policies and procedures that promote best practices in archival management and accessibility
- Lead a team of archivists and support staff, fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and professional development
- Collaborate with state agencies, educational institutions, and community organizations to enhance public awareness and engagement with archival resources
- Advocate for funding and resources to support the mission of the state archives
- Represent the state archives at local, state, and national conferences and meetings
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- Master's degree in archival studies, library science, history, or a related field
- 7+ years of experience in archival management, including supervisory experience
- Strong understanding of archival principles, practices, and standards
- Proven track record of developing and implementing innovative archival programs and services
Preferred:
- Experience in a government or public sector archival setting
- Knowledge of digital preservation and access technologies
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage diverse audiences
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Familiarity with archival standards such as DACS, ISAD(G), and EAD
- Experience with digital asset management systems and archival software
- Proficiency in metadata standards and practices for digital archives
