Role Overview
We are seeking a Marine Mammal Training Supervisor to lead and enhance our training programs focused on the care, enrichment, and behavioral management of marine mammals. This role requires a combination of deep expertise in marine mammal behavior, training methodologies, and leadership skills to foster a team of dedicated trainers while ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare and public education.
Responsibilities
- Develop and oversee comprehensive training protocols for marine mammals, ensuring the application of positive reinforcement techniques and ethical training practices
- Lead a team of marine mammal trainers, providing guidance, mentorship, and regular performance evaluations to enhance their skills and professional growth
- Collaborate with veterinary staff to monitor animal health and welfare, making necessary adjustments to training programs based on individual animal needs
- Design and implement enrichment activities that promote the physical and mental well-being of marine mammals
- Facilitate training sessions for staff and volunteers, promoting best practices in animal training and care
- Engage with guests through public presentations and educational programs, effectively communicating the importance of marine mammal conservation
- Maintain accurate training records and ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Marine Biology, Animal Behavior, Psychology, or a related field
- 5+ years of experience in marine mammal training, with a proven track record of successful behavior modification and training programs
- Strong understanding of marine mammal biology, behavior, and welfare
- Excellent leadership and team management skills
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal
Preferred:
- Experience working with multiple species of marine mammals, including cetaceans and pinnipeds
- Advanced certifications in animal training or animal behavior, such as those from the Animal Behavior Management Alliance (ABMA) or the International Marine Animal Trainers' Association (IMATA)
- Experience with public speaking and educational outreach
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Proficiency in using animal training software and record-keeping systems
- Experience with behavioral observation and assessment tools
- Knowledge of marine mammal care protocols and veterinary practices
