Role Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Forensic Ballistics Specialist to join our investigative team. In this role, you will leverage your expertise in firearms and ammunition analysis to provide critical insights into criminal investigations. You will collaborate with law enforcement agencies and legal teams to ensure accurate and reliable forensic evidence is presented in court.
Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough examinations of firearms, ammunition, and ballistic evidence to determine their relevance to criminal cases.
- Utilize advanced forensic techniques and technologies to analyze ballistics evidence, including bullet striations and gunshot residue.
- Prepare detailed technical reports and presentations of findings for law enforcement and court proceedings.
- Testify as an expert witness in legal proceedings, presenting evidence and findings in a clear and concise manner.
- Collaborate with law enforcement agencies to provide training on ballistic evidence collection and preservation.
- Stay current with advancements in forensic ballistics and contribute to continuous improvement of laboratory processes.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Forensic Science, Criminal Justice, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in forensic ballistics or a related field with a strong understanding of firearms and ammunition.
- Extensive knowledge of ballistics principles, firearms safety, and forensic methodologies.
Preferred:
- Advanced certifications in ballistics or forensic science (e.g., Certified Firearms Examiner).
- Experience working in a crime laboratory or law enforcement setting.
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Proficient in the use of ballistic analysis software and imaging technologies.
- Experience with laboratory equipment used for firearms analysis, including comparison microscopes and digital imaging systems.
- Familiarity with chain of custody protocols and laboratory accreditation standards.
