About Visionworks
Visionworks, originally founded as Eye Care Centers of America (ECCA) in San Antonio, Texas, in 1984, embarked on a journey to become a significant provider of eye care services in the United States. The early years, from 1984 to 1988, were marked by growth, establishing a foundation in the optical retail sector. A notable development occurred in late 1987 when Sears, Roebuck & Co. acquired Eye Care Centers as part of a strategy to bolster its merchandising operations with fast-growing specialty stores. This ownership was, however, a transitional phase. By 1993, a buyout led by Desai Capital Management and ECCA executives returned the company to private hands, setting the stage for further independent expansion throughout the 1990s, largely driven by acquisitions.
The new millennium brought further changes in leadership and ownership. In 1998, Thomas H. Lee Co. acquired a majority stake in Eye Care Centers. David E. McComas took the helm as CEO in 2001. A significant merger in 2006 with HVHC Inc. (Highmark Vision Holding Company) transformed ECCA into one of the largest chains selling eye care products, and eventually, the Visionworks brand became more prominent. This consolidation aimed to leverage the strengths of both entities, enhancing their market presence and service capabilities. The company continued to operate and expand, focusing on providing a comprehensive range of eye care services, including eye exams, prescription eyewear, and contact lenses. In June 2019, VSP Global, a leader in vision care benefits, announced its acquisition of Visionworks. This move integrated Visionworks into VSP's broader network, aiming to enhance accessibility and value for customers and members. Today, Visionworks operates hundreds of retail locations across the United States, positioning itself at the intersection of healthcare and retail, committed to making eye care simple and accessible.
