Trinseo's story begins not in a garage, but as a collection of well-established businesses within the Dow Chemical Company. In 2009, Dow made the strategic decision to group several of its divisions, including styrenics, polycarbonate, and synthetic rubber, for a potential sale. This marked the genesis of what would become a new force in the materials industry. The following year, in 2010, the private equity firm Bain Capital acquired these holdings for $1.63 billion, and the newly independent entity was christened Styron. This pivotal moment set the stage for a journey of transformation and growth, building upon a rich legacy of technological leadership and market expertise inherited from its Dow origins. The early years were focused on establishing a unique identity and a global presence, leveraging its deep-rooted knowledge in plastics and latex binders to serve a diverse range of industries, from automotive and electronics to packaging and construction.

The evolution from Styron to Trinseo in 2012, with the name change being fully adopted across all legal entities by 2015, signified more than just a rebranding. It represented a forward-looking vision to become a global leader in specialty and sustainable material solutions. This new chapter was marked by a commitment to innovation, customer collaboration, and a strong focus on sustainability. The company's full independence as a public company was achieved in 2016 when Bain Capital sold its remaining stake. Headquartered in Wayne, Pennsylvania, Trinseo has expanded its global footprint with manufacturing sites, research and development facilities, and recycling operations across North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region. Under the leadership of President and CEO Frank Bozich, who joined in 2019, Trinseo continues to navigate the complexities of the global market, driving forward with a mission to deliver imaginative, smart, and sustainably-focused solutions that are integral to modern life.
