Overview
The Division of Licensing and Protection, located in the Department of Disabilities, Aging, and Independent Living, is currently seeking an Adult Protective Services (APS) Investigator to provide coverage over northwest and north-central portions of the state. This APS Investigator position will be responsible for working independently to conduct assessments of vulnerable adults and investigate allegations of maltreatment as well as establishing and catalyzing protective and other services to increase safety and reduce the risk of further maltreatment. This APS Investigator will conduct interviews, gather evidence, make referrals, establish linkages to services and prepare reports with conclusions regarding maltreatment. Ideally, this candidate will be self-motivated to work independently, have a background in interviewing various populations, and a strong skillset in identifying needs and making service connections necessary to meet the needs. The selected candidate will have a home-based office and will be required to travel and conduct investigations within an assigned coverage area and may be required to travel to other parts of the State as well depending upon the need. This is a limited-service position with a project period through September of 2024 but may be extended.

Environmental Factors
Duties are performed in a variety of settings, but primarily in the field, including individuals' homes and residential care settings. Considerable field travel is required for which private means of transportation must be available. An incumbent predictably will encounter high level stress and emotional situations, strong differences of opinion, and potentially threatening situations.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in social work, gerontology/aging, disabilities, psychology, criminal justice, or closely related field AND one (1) year or more of experience at a professional level in social work or psychology with a focus on aging and/or disability services, a health care related field, or law enforcement or similar professional role that included significant investigatory responsibilities.
OR
Bachelor's degree AND two (2) years or more of experience at a professional level in social work or psychology with a focus on aging and/or disability services, a health care related field, or law enforcement or similar professional role that included significant investigatory responsibilities.
OR
Associate's degree AND four (4) years or more of experience at a professional level in social work or psychology with a focus on aging and/or disability services, a health care related field, or law enforcement or similar professional role that included significant investigatory responsibilities.
OR
High School diploma or equivalent AND five (5) year or more of experience at a professional level in social work or psychology with a focus on aging and/or disability services, a health care related field, or law enforcement or similar professional role that included significant investigatory responsibilities.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in investigative, legal or law enforcement services.
Special Requirements
Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position. In accordance with AHS Policy 4.02, Hiring Standards, Vermont and/or national criminal record checks, as well as DMV and adult and child abuse registry checks, as appropriate to the position under recruitment, will be conducted on candidates, with the exception of those who are current classified state employees seeking transfer, promotion or demotion into an AHS classified position or are persons exercising re-employment (RIF) rights.
