Smith College

Smith College is a private liberal arts women's college located in Northampton, Massachusetts. Chartered in 1871 following a bequest from Sophia Smith, the college opened its doors in 1875 with 14 students and six faculty members. Sophia Smith's vision was to provide young women with an education equal to that afforded to men, a mission that continues to guide the institution. Today, Smith College is one of the largest women's liberal arts colleges in the United States, enrolling approximately 2,600 undergraduate students from nearly every state and over 50 countries. [2, 4, 7] The college is a member of the historic Seven Sisters colleges and the Five College Consortium, which allows students to take courses at four other nearby institutions: Amherst College, Mount Holyoke College, Hampshire College, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Smith College offers a robust open curriculum, with students having access to over 1,000 courses across more than 50 areas of study in the social sciences and history, the arts, languages, literature, engineering, mathematics, and the natural sciences. It was notably the first women's college in the United States to grant its own undergraduate degrees in engineering through its Picker Engineering Program.
