Team Info:

The developer sandbox team is a platform group that is enabling development at scale on the ServiceNow AI Platform. Developer sandboxes allow for more developers to work in parallel and will help scale AI development on the platform. We partner deeply with products, other engineering teams, and customer-facing teams to build solutions that help our customers work better.

As a Staff Software Engineer on our team, you will play a key role in translating product requirements, designing engineering solutions and prototyping, and leading and delivering the implementation. What you get to do in this role:

  • Build high-quality, clean, scalable and reusable code by enforcing best practices around software engineering architecture and processes (Code Reviews, Unit testing, etc.)
  • Design and develop backend services in Java to extend the platform.
  • Build with a strong emphasis on performance, scalability, and reliability.
  • Optimize database integrations for scalability, management, and access.
  • Partner with the product owners to understand detailed requirements and own your code from design, implementation, test automation and delivery of high-quality products to our users.
  • Partner and coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure other platform components work within the scope of the services.
  • Partner with UI Teams to build out APIs to support management of those services.
  • Ensure dependencies are fulfilled and integrations are designed and implemented in a scalable and extensible way.
  • Ensure that our solutions are performant, identify and address performance issues.
  • Lead the design and implementation of software that is simple to use, extensible, and meets customer requirements.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of new products and features while also enhancing the existing product suite
  • Be a mentor for colleagues and help promote knowledge-sharing

To be successful in this role you have:

  • Demonstrated experience working across other job functions including product and other engineering stakeholders to understand product requirements and translate them to engineering requirements, designs, proof-of-concepts, and final products.
  • Experience with data structures, algorithms, object-oriented design, design patterns, and performance/scale considerations
  • Analytical and design skills
  • Ability to manage projects with material technical risk at a team level

Qualifications

Experience in leveraging or critically thinking about how to integrate AI into work processes, decision-making, or problem-solving. This may include using AI-powered tools, automating workflows, analyzing AI-driven insights, or exploring AI's potential impact on the function or industry.

  • Experience In using AI Productivity tools such as Windsurf, Cursor, etc is a plus or nice to have.
  • 6+ years of experience with Java or a similar OO language

Nice to have:

  • Experience working in databases such as MariaDB and Postgres is a plus
