About role

As a Lead SAP ABAP Engineer you will drive the backend architecture and delivery of our cloud-based SaaS platform built on S/4HANA and SAP BTP technologies. You will design, develop and maintain scalable, secure, high-performance components, own technical decisions, and ensure clean‑core, upgrade‑safe extensibility across our Fioneer solutions. In this role you will lead and mentor a small team of ABAP engineers, collaborate closely with product owners, UX/Fiori leads and cross-functional stakeholders, and translate business needs into robust backend APIs, CDS/OData services and integration patterns.

Responsibilities

• Design, own and govern the architecture of scalable, secure backend components for innovative lending solutions built on ABAP and related SAP technologies.
• Define technical direction, coding standards, and best practices; drive adoption of clean‑core, upgrade‑safe extension patterns across teams.
• Lead implementation efforts, review designs and code, and ensure delivery of high‑quality standard software in an agile environment while collaborating with internal stakeholders, customers and partners.
• Partner strategically with front‑end developers, designers, and product owners to define end‑to‑end solutions, APIs (CDS/OData) and integration patterns.
• Diagnose, prioritize and resolve complex technical issues; coordinate incident response and post‑mortem actions to prevent recurrence.
• Ensure engineering excellence through structured testing strategies (unit, integration, UAT support), CI/CD pipelines, automated quality checks, performance tuning and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Mentor and grow ABAP engineers: conduct code reviews, provide technical coaching, run knowledge‑sharing sessions and support career development.
• Create, maintain and approve comprehensive technical documentation, runbooks and architectural artefacts.
• Drive platform readiness for cloud deployments, oversee security, observability and governance, and lead upgrade/migration planning.
• Stay current with innovations in S/4HANA, RAP and SAP BTP and evaluate their adoption to advance the platform roadmap.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
• 10+ years of experience in ABAP object-oriented development, with substantial hands‑on work on S/4HANA (experience in the financial sector is a plus).
• Proven track record (3+ years) leading and mentoring engineering teams, driving technical decisions and delivery in enterprise SAP projects.
• Deep proficiency in OData, Core Data Services (CDS), and ABAP RESTful Application Programming (RAP).
• Practical experience with SAP BTP (services, deployment approaches, integration concepts) and cloud readiness for enterprise solutions.
• Strong architecture and design skills: defining extension patterns, clean‑core strategies, multi‑tenant SaaS considerations, and upgrade‑safe solutions.
• Experience with CI/CD for ABAP, automated testing strategies, performance tuning, observability, and operational readiness.
• Familiarity with modern SAP development tools (Business Application Studio, Eclipse, or Visual Studio Code).
• Excellent problem‑solving and decision‑making skills; ability to break down technical complexity and balance risks.
• Strong stakeholder management and communication skills; experienced collaborating with product, UX/Fiori, DevOps and business teams.
• Fluent in English.

Nice-to-have

• Certification in S/4HANA, SAP BTP, or related SAP technologies.
• Domain experience with banking products and processes (e.g., retail lending, regulatory reporting).
• Full‑stack experience with SAP UI5/Fiori or close collaboration history with UI leads.
• Hands‑on experience with SAP HANA (AMDP, performance modeling).
• Exposure to event‑driven architectures and integration patterns on SAP BTP.
• Experience working in agile frameworks (Scrum / SAFe) and leading international, cross‑functional teams.
