ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
Public Rights Project (PRP) is a national nonprofit organization that helps local government officials fight for civil rights. We build their capacity to protect and advance civil rights, convene and connect them on key issues, and provide legal representation to help them win in court for residents. Since its founding in 2017, PRP has recovered significant financial relief for marginalized people; built a nationwide network of government offices, elected officials, and community-based organizations; trained prosecutors and government lawyers across the country; and secured court victories on rights for abortion, immigrants, workers, and voting.   • Work closely with program, legal, and communications team members to stay current on PRP’s work and translate ongoing activities into funder-facing materials;
  • Translate complex or evolving work into clear, funder-facing materials that support PRP’s broader fundraising strategy and messaging;
  • Contribute to goal setting and grants management strategies for the Development department;
  • Incorporate prospect research, organizational metrics, and branded communications assets into grant writing deliverables;
  • Identify opportunities to enhance workflows for grant writing and reporting, including how information is shared, tracked, and reused; and
  • Support team effectiveness by sharing feedback, contributing to internal discussions, and helping strengthen how the team approaches grant writing.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Two (2) to four (4) years of professional experience in writing-heavy roles where written communication and outputs are a core responsibility;
  • Experience with grant writing, fundraising, or development work is helpful but not required;
  • Success producing structured and compelling written work such as reports, proposals, advocacy, educational, or policy content;
  • Experience managing multiple projects or deliverables at once, often with overlapping deadlines;
  • Experience working across teams to gather input and develop written materials;
  • Background in advocacy, policy, legal, communications, or other mission-driven work, or related fields;
  • Experience translating complex or technical topics into accessible, audience-facing content; and
  • Familiarity with project tracking tools (i.e. - Asana or similar) to manage workflows.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Strong written storytelling ability, especially when translating complex or technical work into compelling external materials;
  • Ability to take ownership of and manage multiple projects at once with minimal oversight, maintaining timelines, quality, and attention to detail;
  • Ability to gather input across stakeholders and synthesize into clear, structured deliverables;
  • Proactive in identifying gaps, solving problems, and keeping work moving forward;
  • Communicates effectively across teams, helping to align stakeholders on priorities, timelines, and deliverables;
  • Contributes to improving processes, workflows, and team coordination over time;

At Public Rights Project, we are at the forefront of a groundbreaking movement to reshape the landscape of civil rights enforcement in the United States. Through pioneering legal strategies and innovative partnerships, we are revolutionizing the way state, local, and tribal governments protect their communities. Our work is centered on the conviction that these government entities possess immense, yet often underutilized, power to be proactive defenders of civil rights, economic justice, and environmental sustainability. We are not just a legal organization; we are architects of a new model for public service, one that is agile, community-accountable, and capable of tackling the most pressing systemic inequities of our time. By providing crucial litigation support, expert legal representation, and transformative training programs, we empower our government partners to move beyond reactive measures and become catalysts for profound social change. This innovative approach allows them to challenge corporate malfeasance, combat discriminatory practices, and ensure that the promise of our laws is a lived reality for everyone, especially the most marginalized populations.

Our innovation extends to how we build and sustain this movement. We have developed a unique fellowship program that embeds talented, public-interest-minded attorneys within government offices, infusing these institutions with fresh perspectives and cutting-edge legal skills. This initiative not only expands the capacity of our partners but also cultivates the next generation of leaders in public rights law. Furthermore, we are pioneering new forms of collaboration between government and community-based organizations, fostering a holistic approach to justice that is rooted in the lived experiences of those most affected by systemic harm. Since our inception in 2017, this forward-thinking model has yielded tangible results, recovering millions in relief for vulnerable communities and securing critical victories on issues ranging from reproductive freedom to workers' rights and voting access. Public Rights Project is committed to continuously evolving our strategies and leveraging technology and data to identify emerging threats and opportunities, ensuring that our government partners are always equipped to be the most effective champions for their residents.
