In 2014, industry leaders at Imagination Technologies and other founding members recognized a critical gap in the embedded device ecosystem: the costly and complex integration of Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) middleware was severely hindering service providers' ability to innovate and deploy new services. This inefficiency stemmed from a lack of robust, open-source software and standardized APIs, causing middleware fragmentation that prolonged time-to-market, limited vendor collaboration, and increased costs. They realized that without open standards and collaborative development, the connected device landscape would remain fragmented and proprietary.

Thus, the prpl Foundation was born - a community-driven, non-profit organization dedicated to building a future-proof platform for embedded devices through open-source software and open industry standards. By uniting service providers, OEMs, chip vendors, and developers around collaborative development, prpl delivers value across the connected device landscape. The foundation develops carrier-grade software like prplOS and prplMesh, built on proven frameworks like OpenWRT and Linux, to enable security, interoperability, and vendor flexibility. Today, prpl continues to drive rapid CPE innovation through community collaboration, helping network providers introduce new services faster while lowering total ownership costs and avoiding vendor lock-in.
