About Prepared

Emergency centers, vital to our society, are often constrained by technology that dates back to the landline era. This presents a stark contrast to our current smartphone-centric, socially connected world. At Prepared, we bridge this gap with cutting-edge technology that harnesses the power of Artificial Intelligence to revolutionize how emergency calls are handled. Our innovative technology is providing a suite of tools that significantly boost the capabilities of 911 dispatch centers and first responders. With our solutions implemented in over 800 cities across 48 states, we're positively impacting the lives of approximately 75 million people.

Backed by $27 million in Series B funding led by Andreessen Horowitz, we're scaling rapidly to become a core component of emergency calls nationwide, driving the future of emergency response toward a safer, more agile system.

Joining the Prepared team means more than just a new role. It's a chance to be at the forefront of impactful tech that significantly improves public safety and touches lives across the globe. At Prepared, you're not just part of a team; you're a key player in a larger mission to foster a safer, more interconnected world.

Position Overview

Prepared is seeking a mission-driven, high-agency Counsel to join as the company’s first full-time legal hire, reporting directly to our VP of Strategy & General Counsel. In this foundational role, you’ll take ownership of our legal operations, support commercial growth, and help reduce legal risk across labor, compliance, data privacy, and contracting. This is a rare opportunity for a big-law trained attorney to transition into a high-impact, in-house role at a fast-scaling AI startup with a public mission: improving the nation’s 911 infrastructure. You’ll work closely with cross-functional teams, bring clarity to complex legal questions, and shape the future of Prepared’s legal function from the ground up.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own day-to-day legal operations across the business: from contract management and compliance to cross-functional policy development.

  • Lead commercial contract reviews, negotiations, and approvals—including customer, vendor, and partnership agreements.

  • Partner with Sales and GTM teams to negotiate terms and develop playbooks that unlock speed while preserving legal integrity.

  • Identify and close legal and regulatory gaps related to employment law, state filings, data privacy, and emerging AI regulations.

  • Serve as a responsive resource to internal teams and a strategic partner to leadership across Legal, People, Product, and Engineering.

  • Support and improve organizational legal hygiene—reducing “legal debt” through documentation, systems, and structure.

What Make You a Great Fit

  • You are a licensed attorney (member of the California state bar, or another state) with 5+ years of legal experience.

  • You bring at least 3 years of experience at an AmLaw 100 firm or a similarly high-caliber legal environment, where you developed strong training in legal analysis, communication, and execution.

  • You have subject matter knowledge in labor & employment, California data privacy laws, and commercial contracting.

  • You’ve supported fast-paced teams and are confident building structure where little exists.

  • You’re motivated by solving complex problems with creativity and collaboration—especially when the outcome drives mission-aligned impact.

  • You translate legal complexity into clear, actionable solutions—and partner across teams to move quickly while staying grounded in empathy and sound judgment.

Bonus (optional)

  • Experience working with or advising startups

  • Experience working in, or with, public safety

Pay Transparency

The base compensation for this role is approximately $160,000–210,000 per year. You are also eligible for employee benefits, company equity grants, participation in Prepared’s unlimited vacation program.

Revolutionize emergency communications from beginning to end.

In this day and age, public safety agencies can call on an abundance of data to make smarter, more-informed decisions. Still, information friction from caller to telecommunicator to field responder causes ineffective and inefficient responses to 9-1-1 calls.

Telecommunicators are forced to rely on the caller as the sole source of truth. Field responders can only leverage the brief description passed on from the PSAP and thus enter the scene underprepared.

But what if the problem isn't just the use of the data, it's also the data itself? By adding live video and other media from the caller, emergency response evolves. Eyes are on-scene faster, the situation at-hand is clearer, and each stakeholder can make more confident, better informed decisions that result in a higher likelihood that everyone comes home.
