In 2023, Sam Ross, a former Airbnb product manager who had previously bootstrapped DTC brands, found himself traveling the world after a successful exit. Ross reunited with Matt DuVall, an ex-Stripe and Notion engineer, to build Numeral - a comprehensive AI-powered sales tax compliance platform that would automate everything from nexus detection and registrations to filings and remittances. Emerging from Y Combinator's Winter 2023 batch, the company quickly became the fastest, easiest way for ecommerce and SaaS businesses to stay compliant with US sales tax and global VAT. Today, Numeral serves over 2,000 customers, has processed $5 billion in transaction volume, and raised $57 million in funding to build what they call the automation backbone for internet commerce.
