In 2023, Sam Ross, a former Airbnb product manager who had previously bootstrapped DTC brands, found himself traveling the world after a successful exit. During his time running ecommerce businesses, he had personally experienced the chaos that followed the 2018 Supreme Court Wayfair ruling, which expanded sales tax nexus requirements across 11,000+ US jurisdictions. He watched founders and finance teams waste countless hours deciphering quirky tax rules - like how whole bagels are tax-exempt in New York but sliced ones aren't. This painful necessity was distracting businesses from what they actually loved: building great products.

Ross reunited with Matt DuVall, an ex-Stripe and Notion engineer, to build Numeral - a comprehensive AI-powered sales tax compliance platform that would automate everything from nexus detection and registrations to filings and remittances. Emerging from Y Combinator's Winter 2023 batch, the company quickly became the fastest, easiest way for ecommerce and SaaS businesses to stay compliant with US sales tax and global VAT. Today, Numeral serves over 2,000 customers, has processed $5 billion in transaction volume, and raised $57 million in funding to build what they call the automation backbone for internet commerce.
