Position Summary:

Provides customers with wood and/or steel truss designs that are both economically feasible and structurally sound using design aids and engineering judgment. Independently evaluates, selects, and applies standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria, using judgment in making minor adaptations and modifications to truss designs. Provide support and technical input for Alpine’s engineering software development.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Reviews, corrects and completes all customer-generated designs, as they are assigned according to design specifications and appropriate engineering principles. Correctly applies general engineering notes as required.

  • Provides technical consultation to customers regarding engineering needs and reviews assigned customer-generated designs and processes according to targeted timetable. Also provides routine consultation services for customers to resolve questions, design information, and special drawing requests i.e., design improvements, calculation of special loads, etc., as needed.

  • Designs trusses with the aid of the computerized, proprietary truss analysis and design software with information taken from documents, verbal instructions, or from the framing layout plans submitted by the customer. Applies engineering principles to daily design work with specific proficiency in statics and strength of materials.

  • Performs nonstandard or moderately complex designs and frame analyses with simple repairs of designs, provided a re-evaluation of the entire structural system is not needed.

  • Reviews assignments of Designer/Drafter/Technician employees for completeness and technical accuracy prior to sending to customers.

  • Proficiency with plating methods, light gauge steel connection methods, general notes and their application, design manuals and span tables.

  • Proficient knowledge of design policies, applicable design standards and building codes.

  • Provides high quality customer service to all internal and external customers. Meets all deadlines for turn-around time of design jobs.

  • Other tasks and duties as assigned.

  • Adaptability - Has ability to adapt quickly to new information, fluctuating work circumstances and multiple project priorities. Is aware of longer-term implications and initiates creative solutions to efficiently complete projects and tasks.

Job Requirements:

  • BS, Civil Engineering or related discipline where statics, strength of materials, structural analysis and structural design are core requirements.

  • Canadian EIT Certification strongly preferred. P.Eng certification is an asset but not required.

  • Fully familiar with drafting techniques and presentation of truss designs. Knowledgeable of truss terms and technical engineering terms and their use.

  • Able to read and interpret roof layouts, structural and architectural plans, and make truss takeoffs from these and determine truss configurations. Proficiency in plan takeoffs and determination of the best structural solutions and most economical systems.

  • Working knowledge of MS Office.

  • Good communication and documentation skills in English is essential, with the ability to work independently and in teams. Ability to communicate in French favorable but not required.

  • Approximately 10% of travel may be required.
