We are currently seeking candidates located within 60 miles of any of the listed hubs to foster more in-person connections while maintaining our flexible remote culture.

About This Position

The Environmental and Permitting Manager will be responsible for assisting with environmental diligence, discretionary permit processing and acquisition, and pre-construction permit implementation for gigawatt-scale greenfield and MA renewable energy projects (including wind, solar PV, and BESS) in the Great Plains, South Central Region, and the Pacific Northwest. This position provides the opportunity to work cross-disciplinarily across a wide variety of specialties including business, finance, communications, biology, policy, and real estate. This position will report directly to the Director or Senior Director of Environmental and Permitting and work closely with MA, Development, Real Estate, Community Engagement, Engineering, GIS, and Construction leads.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Perform critical environmental and permitting due diligence on potential MA projects, and make informed and strategic recommendations to the MA team on environmental and permitting risks and opportunities, leveraging consultant resources as needed, with little management oversight
  • Prepare, submit, and coordinate discretionary permit applications and other entitlements critical to project viability and success
  • Manage a network of external consultants in the scoping of biological, cultural, and other resource surveys and the preparation of diligence documents (including legal counsel for permit opinions and guidance) necessary for environmental permitting and financing processes
  • Manage and keep up to date project permitting schedules and budgets
  • Review draft permit requirements, maintain project obligation tracker, and complete permitting exhibits for contracts with project engineering, procurement, construction contractors
  • Coordinate with and solicit feedback from a network of geographically dispersed internal colleagues in the preparation of land use permit applications and environmental documents
  • Review zoning, floodplain, biological resources, wetlands, cultural resources, permitting fees, entitlement processes, design requirements, community attributes and other site-specific considerations to support project development
  • Attend site visits in the field related to site assessment, community engagement, agency review, and construction
  • Research and clearly/comprehensively summarize land, environmental review, and permitting opportunities, risks, and requirements for early stage project jurisdictions
  • Attend local, state, federal land use planning and zoning meetings and industry association discussions
  • Prepare presentation materials for, and participate in meetings with, key external stakeholders including local, state, and federal agencies, elected officials, project communities, environmental NGOs, and Native American tribes. With support, present project information and negotiate project mitigation measures with agencies
  • Prepare and provide permit implementation documentation to regulatory agencies, and prosecute permit approvals in compliance with the law
  • Develop internal presentation, communication, and approval materials for executive management and other internal stakeholders
  • Conduct careful review of documents critical to a successful permitting and financing process

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Political Science/Government, Geography, Geology, Hydrology, Economics or other related field
  • Master’s Degree in a related field, or an MBA, is a plus
  • Five (5) or more years of work experience in land development, environmental consulting, permitting, renewable energy, real estate, planning, policy, or other related field
  • Experience prosecuting land use and environmental permits for land development projects across multiple geographies, specifically for wind and solar projects
  • Deductive reasoning, fundamental quantitative, and strategic thinking skills are mandatory, as is a disciplined approach to identifying risks and opportunities for projects
  • Experience working with local, state, federal land management agencies, environmental NGOs, or Native American tribes
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Meticulous attention to detail and quality of work product
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills Independent and self-directed, but unafraid to ask questions where needed
  • Proven ability to plan, prioritize, and execute in a timely and accurate manner
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic, and cross-disciplinary environment
  • Ability to summarize complex issues, identify opportunities or next steps with limited guidance
  • A strong thirst to learn and grow, and to participate in the nation’s clean energy transition
  • Familiarity with land/environmental policy/law (particularly NEPA, ESA, MBTA, BGEPA, CWA) is requiredFamiliarity with Google Earth, ArcGIS online
  • Ability and willingness to travel within the United States approximately twice per quarter, or as required
