In 1926, a group of plumbing and mechanical officials recognized the critical need for standardized codes to protect public health and safety across the United States. This pioneering vision gave birth to the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO), an organization that would become the global leader in codes and standards development for the built environment. From its early days of coordinating regional plumbing codes, IAPMO has evolved into a comprehensive organization with over 20 business units worldwide, offering product testing, certification, inspection services, professional development, industry research, and policy advocacy.

Today, IAPMO serves as one of only six ANSI-accredited standards development organizations in the United States and the only one in the plumbing industry to achieve this prestigious status. The organization develops and publishes the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC), the only plumbing code designated as an American National Standard, along with the Uniform Mechanical Code, Uniform Solar Energy Code, and the Water Efficiency and Sanitation Standard (WE-Stand). With operations spanning North America, Oceania, India, Indonesia, and Mexico, IAPMO's team of engineers, scientists, technicians, and industry experts works tirelessly to advance safe and efficient plumbing and mechanical systems globally. The organization's mission extends beyond codes to include workforce training, professional certification, and advocacy efforts that shape the future of building safety and water efficiency.
