Gemological Science International (GSI) embarked on its journey in 2005, founded in New York City by Mark Gershburg and Debbie Azar. This makes GSI the only major gemological organization established in the 21st century. The founders envisioned a modern, state-of-the-art diamond grading lab that would leverage the latest technological breakthroughs. In an industry populated by laboratories that were virtually indistinguishable, where diamonds were primarily graded by hand and eye – an ultimately subjective assessment – GSI sought to enhance this process by incorporating advanced technology and intelligent software. They reengineered the diamond grading process, grounding it in foolproof cutting-edge technology and automation to ensure diamonds are graded to the highest standards.

From its inception, GSI has been committed to integrity, innovation, professional service, and shared research and education – the four pillars of its operations. Proprietary software lies at the heart of GSI's diamond grading process, designed to reduce the chances of human error by automating aspects of the grading. This same ethos has guided GSI's global expansion efforts, growing from its New York City headquarters in the Diamond District to one of the largest gemological entities in the world, with laboratories spanning four continents, including locations in India, Israel, UAE, Belgium, Botswana, and Hong Kong. All GSI offices constantly exchange information and knowledge, fostering continuous improvement in operations and ensuring the highest quality of diamond grading globally. GSI has become a leader in testing and detecting undisclosed lab-grown diamonds in finished jewelry and is committed to advancing gemological research, offering educational programs for both trade professionals and the general public.
