The Opportunity
This position presents an opportunity for a Thermal Subject Matter Expert to assume a role with significant impact. We are developing advanced drone technology and are seeking a Senior Staff Thermal Engineer to play a key role in defining our product architecture. The incumbent will have a key role in influencing decisions across Mechanical, Electrical, and Performance domains. Their expertise will be vital to our initiatives aimed at advancing the drone market and providing tangible benefits to communities.
The Skillset
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering
10+ years of experience in consumer electronics, Industrial IoT, or related industries, specializing in Mechanical/ID and thermal design optimization.
5+ years designing advanced thermal systems for integrated hardware products.
Deep expertise in thermal management design elements including TIM, spreaders, heat sinks, vapor chambers, heat pipes, and fans.
Proven experience designing both passive and active thermal management systems.
Skilled in thermal testing, including sensor selection, data acquisition, and post-processing.
Expert in creating FEA-CFD models and conducting full thermal system simulations and analyses.
Proficient with thermal simulation tools such as ANSYS-Icepak, Flotherm, and similar.
Familiar with designing for industry-leading, ARM-based processor systems (e.g., Qualcomm, Ambarella, Nvidia).
Adept at designing and executing thermal tests in a lab environment, with hands-on experience in airflow and temperature measurement.
Proficiency in 3D CAD tools (SolidWorks, Creo)
Exceptional ability to communicate complex technical content effectively, both written and verbally.

The First 30 Days
Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams and external partners to establish and meet design requirements and decisions, particularly those related to the thermal performance of product designs.
Develop a deep understanding of product architectures, vendor capabilities, operational contexts, and performance objectives.
Evaluate and optimize designs for thermal performance throughout the product lifecycle.
Establish and maintain the necessary tools and software for comprehensive thermal analysis and simulations.
Execute thermal validation and characterization tests, presenting findings to stakeholders and proposing hardware/software mitigation strategies for existing designs as needed.
The First 60 Days
Provide guidance and direction to design teams to ensure optimized thermal design envelopes to meet all required operational specs.
Conduct thorough analysis and testing to validate design choices and make necessary improvements.
Propose innovative optimizations across products, thermally modeling small form factor computing devices with a wide variety of heat sources: chipsets, memory/storage devices, batteries/chargers, RF transceivers, LEDs, and sensors
90 Days & Beyond
Conduct thermal design reviews, and perform thermal simulations utilizing CFD tools, from prototype to release to Mass Production.
Create FEA-CFD models for mechanical systems, perform static, dynamic, and thermal-mechanical analyses in multi-physics environments.
Guide the development of custom SW solutions, as required, for thermal management and mitigation
Develop, standardize, and document a test plan for design efforts in order to validate and characterize physical designs.
In this role, you’ll receive a starting salary between $168,000 - $231,000, as well as Flock Safety Stock Options.

At Flock Safety, we compensate our employees fairly for their work. Base salary is determined by job-related experience, education/training, as well as market indicators.
