DHIS2

At DHIS2, groundbreaking technology is revolutionizing health information management and beyond across the globe. Originating from a collaborative action research project in post-Apartheid South Africa in 1994 between the University of Oslo (UiO) and the University of the Western Cape, DHIS2 was conceived to support the digitalization of decentralized health system management. This initiative, known as the Health Information Systems Programme (HISP), has since blossomed into a global network coordinated by the HISP Centre at UiO. The DHIS2 software platform itself is a testament to this enduring commitment to innovation, evolving from its initial Microsoft Access-based versions to a robust, web-based, open-source platform.

DHIS2's core strength lies in its flexible and customizable design, allowing it to be adapted for a multitude of sectors beyond health, including education, logistics, agriculture, and water and sanitation. The platform empowers users with tools for data collection (both aggregate and individual-level), reporting, in-depth analysis, and dynamic data visualization through features like maps, charts, and pivot tables. Its Tracker application enables the longitudinal tracking of individuals or entities, crucial for case-based data management in areas like HIV program monitoring or maternal and child health. Recognizing its global impact and open nature, DHIS2 is endorsed as a Digital Public Good. The development is a collaborative global effort, with developers located worldwide, all coordinated by the HISP Centre at the University of Oslo. This ongoing innovation ensures DHIS2 remains at the forefront of information system technology, facilitating data-driven decision-making for governments and NGOs in over 80 low and middle-income countries, impacting the lives of billions.
