The Platform Storage team powers the foundational data services that make dbt Cloud run—delivering the reliability, performance, and scale our customers rely on every day. As our Engineering Manager, you’ll lead the engineers who architect and operate core storage infrastructure such as PostgreSQL, Redis, Elasticsearch, and more.

This is a high-impact role where you will shape the future of dbt Cloud’s storage platform, influence cross-company technical strategy, and ensure our systems evolve to meet the needs of a rapidly growing customer base. Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) practices—especially technologies like Terraform—are central to how we operate and scale, and you’ll guide the team in leveraging them to build resilient, repeatable, and secure systems.

In this role, you can expect to:

  • Lead, support, and grow a high-performing team of 6–8 distributed platform engineers.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop engineers to help them grow in their craft and in their careers.
  • Own the reliability, scalability, and availability of the storage services that underpin dbt Cloud.
  • Ensure Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) principles are deeply embedded in how the team builds, deploys, and maintains infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on Terraform-based automation.
  • Partner with product, architecture, and other engineering teams to deliver key initiatives that depend on performant, well-managed storage systems.
  • Guide the evolution of our storage platform—including PostgreSQL, Redis, Elasticsearch, and other core services—to ensure cost-efficient, secure, and robust operation.
  • Drive high-quality execution by facilitating clear communication, strong incident response practices, and sound technical decision-making.
  • Hold regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and ongoing feedback conversations with each member of your team.
  • Actively participate in hiring, from sourcing and interviewing to onboarding new team members.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-trust engineering culture.

You are a good fit if you have:

  • 5+ years of hands-on technical management experience leading engineering teams.
  • Experience overseeing platform, infrastructure, or storage-focused engineering work.
  • Demonstrated experience growing and developing engineers at all levels.
  • Strong technical understanding of modern infrastructure practices, including IaC tooling such as Terraform.
  • Experience coordinating multi-team or cross-functional engineering initiatives.
  • Strong technical depth and the ability to engage in detailed discussions with engineers about architectural tradeoffs.
  • A values-driven mindset aligned with dbt Labs’ mission and operating principles.
  • Worked asynchronously as part of a fully remote, distributed team.

You'll have an edge if you have:

  • Experience operating or scaling PostgreSQL, Redis, Elasticsearch, or similar storage technologies.
  • Hands-on experience designing or managing cloud infrastructure with Terraform or other IaC frameworks.
  • Background in running distributed systems in cloud environments.
  • Experience with cost-optimization, performance tuning, or reliability engineering.
  • Managed a distributed team of engineers or worked extensively in remote-first environments.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Experience at a high-growth startup or in a fast-scaling engineering organization.
