The story of Cosan S.A. is a remarkable journey of transformation, from a single sugarcane mill in the Brazilian countryside to a global energy and infrastructure giant. Its origins trace back to 1936, when the Ometto family acquired the Costa Pinto sugarcane mill in Piracicaba, São Paulo. For decades, the company focused on its agricultural roots, cultivating sugarcane and producing sugar and ethanol. This foundational period established a deep understanding of the land and the energy potential held within Brazil's natural resources. The second half of the 20th century marked a period of significant expansion. Starting in the 1980s, under the visionary leadership of Rubens Ometto Silveira Mello, the company embarked on an aggressive growth strategy, acquiring numerous mills across São Paulo state. This strategic consolidation rapidly transformed the family-owned enterprise into one of the largest sugar and ethanol producers in the world, a testament to its operational efficiency and ambitious vision.

The new millennium heralded a new era of diversification and strategic evolution for Cosan. Recognizing the interconnectedness of energy and logistics, the company began to look beyond the sugarcane fields. A pivotal moment came with the creation of Raízen, a groundbreaking joint venture with Royal Dutch Shell. This partnership combined Cosan's expertise in bioenergy production with Shell's global distribution network, creating an integrated energy powerhouse involved in everything from ethanol production to fuel distribution through a vast network of service stations. But the ambition didn't stop there. Cosan strategically expanded into Brazil's critical infrastructure, acquiring a controlling stake in Comgás, the country's largest natural gas distributor, and forming Rumo, which would become the nation's dominant rail logistics operator, essential for transporting agricultural commodities. Through its subsidiary Moove, it also established a global presence in the lubricants market. Today, Cosan stands as a diversified holding company, a portfolio of leading businesses in vital sectors, continually investing in assets that are fundamental to societal development and a sustainable future.
