CHS Inc.'s story began in 1931, born from the resilient spirit of American farmers and ranchers. Initially formed as the Farmers Union Central Exchange in St. Paul, Minnesota, by a modest group of local oil cooperatives, its foundational purpose was to empower agricultural producers. Another key part of its lineage, North Pacific Grain Growers (NPGG), was established even earlier, in 1929, in Lewiston, Idaho, eventually relocating to Portland, Oregon. These entities, along with others like the GTA (formed in 1938), evolved over decades, driven by the cooperative principle of shared success. A significant milestone occurred in 1983 when NPGG and GTA merged to create Harvest States Cooperatives. This set the stage for an even larger unification.

The modern CHS Inc. as we know it was forged in June 1998 through the landmark merger of Cenex Inc. (the evolved Farmers Union Central Exchange) and Harvest States Cooperatives. This powerful combination created Cenex Harvest States Cooperatives, a name that was officially streamlined to CHS Inc. in 2003. From these historic roots, CHS has grown into a Fortune 500 company and the United States' largest farmer-owned cooperative. It's a diversified global agribusiness, deeply involved in energy, agronomy, grains, and foods. The company's mission remains steadfast: to create connections that empower agriculture. With over 10,000 employees worldwide, CHS serves its farmer-owners, member cooperatives, and customers in approximately 65 countries by providing essential inputs, market access, and a robust supply chain, helping to feed a growing global population.
