About Us:
CALSTART is a mission-driven industry organization focused on transportation decarbonization and clean air for all.
For over 30 years, it’s been CALSTART’s mission to develop, assess, and implement large-scale, zero-emission transportation solutions to mitigate climate change and support economic growth. CALSTART works with businesses, organizations, governments, and communities to create real-life impact toward clean air and equitable access to clean transportation for all. CALSTART provides scientific, technical and policy support for regulatory development and clean technology and infrastructure acceleration.

About The Role:

We are seeking a skilled Business Analyst for a full-time, 6-month (with the opportunity to extend) on a contract basis.
The Technical Business Analyst plays a critical role in translating complex program policies and business needs into clear, testable software requirements for multiple program teams using Salesforce and related tools. This role is focused on requirements quality and SDLC execution, ensuring that work entering delivery is well-defined, measurable, and fully “interlocked” into development and testing practices.
The Technical Business Analyst partners closely with Program teams, Project/Program Managers, Salesforce Admins, Developers (internal and vendor), and QA/UAT stakeholders to drive clarity, reduce rework, and support consistent delivery outcomes across the lifecycle from intake through release.
This position is critical in fast-moving environments where multiple stakeholders (internal teams, external partners, and developers) are contributing feedback simultaneously. The Technical Business Analyst protects delivery momentum by creating structure, clarity, and a single source of truth across UAT, backlog management, and solution alignment.
CALSTART values transparency and strives to provide as much information regarding compensation as possible. The rate for this contract position is $50 per hour.
This is a 40 hour per week contract position with the possibility to extend as well as convert to full time if the needs arise.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead structured discovery with program and operations stakeholders to uncover goals, constraints, exceptions, edge cases, and decision logic.
  • Translate policy and operational needs into build-ready requirements artifacts such as: epics/features/user stories with clear acceptance criteria and Definition of Ready alignment process maps (current/future), workflow diagrams, and decision trees/rule logic data requirements (objects/fields, definitions, validations, reporting needs) integration requirements (upstream/downstream systems, handoffs, error states)
  • Facilitate requirement reviews and alignment sessions, ensuring shared understanding and documented decisions.
  • Backlog + Delivery Support: Act as a gatekeeper for incoming work requests.
  • Partner with PMs to shape intake, clarify scope boundaries, and support prioritization based on value, risk, dependencies, and effort.
  • Collaborate with Admins/Devs to validate feasibility, identify dependencies, and reduce churn caused by unclear requirements.
  • Maintain traceability from intake → requirements → build → test.
  • Testing Interlock (QA/UAT): Enable strong UAT outcomes by defining test scenarios, supporting test case creation, and ensuring acceptance criteria are testable.
  • Support triage of requirement-related defects and change requests, clarifying intent and updating documentation as needed.
  • Documentation + Standards: Maintain high-quality documentation in Confluence (or equivalent) and ensure consistent artifact quality across initiatives.
  • Apply and reinforce team SDLC standards (story quality, acceptance criteria, readiness, and test alignment).

What You’ll Bring to the Table:

  • 7+ years experience as a Business Analyst / Senior Business Analyst supporting software delivery in an SDLC environment.
  • Demonstrated excellence in stakeholder interviewing and translating ambiguous asks into clear, testable requirements.
  • Strong experience writing user stories, acceptance criteria, and functional requirements that reduce delivery rework.
  • Strong process mapping skills (current/future state) and ability to translate process into system behavior.
  • Salesforce ecosystem experience (Sales/Service Cloud and/or Experience Cloud), including understanding of objects/data concepts and automation constraints.
  • Experience collaborating with Salesforce admins/developers and/or external vendors to deliver solutions.
  • Proficiency with Jira (or similar) and strong documentation practices (Confluence or similar).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting UAT/test planning and converting requirements into test scenarios/cases.
  • Experience in rules-driven environments (eligibility, incentives, compliance-like program requirements) where edge cases and auditability.
  • BA certifications (CBAP, PMI-PBA) a plus.
We understand that not everyone will match the above qualifications 100%. If your background isn't perfectly aligned but you feel you would be a great addition to the team, we'd love to hear from you.
We're a tight-knit team of world-class innovators, business minds, and change agents who believe passionately in our mission and put our team ahead of self. We are committed to the continued development and growth of our employees and invest in your success!
