Building Tomorrow

Building Tomorrow is a community-powered organization that harnesses the potential of local change-makers to connect learners in East Africa with transformational education programs. Founded in 2006, the organization operates across Uganda and Rwanda, with its headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana. Through a network of over 500 Building Tomorrow Fellows and more than 21,000 Community Education Volunteers, the organization partners with local communities and governments to identify, enroll, and support out-of-school children while improving foundational literacy and numeracy for those already in school.

The organization implements two main initiatives: Primary School Construction and the Thriving Schools Program. The Thriving Schools Program includes the Roots to Rise (R2R) literacy and numeracy initiative, the Building Tomorrow Fellows program that trains recent Ugandan university graduates, and the Tomorrow is Now education system strengthening initiative. Their innovative at-home and community-based literacy and numeracy initiatives proved critical during Uganda's nearly two-year COVID-19 school closure, providing the only formal education available to many families in remote villages. To date, Building Tomorrow has enrolled more than 191,000 out-of-school children and reached over 652,000 learners with their evidence-based learning programs.
