The Boeing Company is currently seeking a Associate Real-time Embedded Software Engineer to support our Defense Mission Computing Team located in Hazelwood, Missouri. The ideal candidate will be hands-on, combining deep real-time and embedded systems expertise with experience in safety, security, and domain separation (cross-domain) technologies. This position will focus on supporting the Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) Software Engineering organization in its new headquarters.

The ideal candidate for this role is experienced at low level infrastructure for safety and security critical application, using rigorous design practices, efficient and automated processes and tools, to deliver on-time, high quality, safety assured and cyber assured software.

Our teams are currently hiring for a broad range of experience levels including Associate and Experienced Level Software Engineers.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Designs, develops, tests, debugs and maintains software that is integrated into embedded devices and systems and meets industry, customer, safety and regulation standards
  • Reviews, analyzes, and translates customer requirements into the design of software products for embedded devices and systems
  • Builds and writes code for embedded systems software to run on specific specialized hardware
  • Integrates embedded software with hardware components
  • Analyzes, monitors and improves the efficiency and stability of embedded software systems
  • Tests and debugs software for embedded devices and systems
  • Implements current and emerging technologies, tools, frameworks, and changes in regulations relevant to software development and hardware technologies
  • Advises on software and hardware integration domains
  • Tracks and evaluates internal and supplier software team performance to ensure product and process compliance to project plans and industry standards
  • Performs embedded software project management functions

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/ Experience):

  • 2+ years hands-on experience in embedded software development for commercial or safety-relevant products.
  • 2+ years proficiency in C and C++ for embedded systems.
  • 1+ years experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS) and bare-metal development.
  • 2+ years hands-on experience with version control systems (Git), issue trackers (JIRA), and CI tooling for embedded builds.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science
  • Level 2: 1 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Level 3: 3 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • knowledge of embedded build systems, cross-compilation toolchains, and board bring-up processes.
  • familiarity with hardware interfaces and protocols (UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, Ethernet, USB).
  • experience with hardware debugging tools (JTAG, SWD), debuggers (GDB, vendor tools), and instrumentation (logic analyzers, oscilloscopes).
  • Experience in regulated or safety-certifiable environments (DO-178C, ISO 26262, IEC 61508) or industries such as avionics, automotive, or medical.
  • Experience with bootloaders, BSPs, device drivers, and flash/storage subsystems.
  • Familiarity with assembly language on any processor is a plus.
  • Familiarity with automated testing frameworks for embedded systems and test-driven development practices.
  • Experience working with external suppliers and performing basic supplier compliance evaluations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to produce and maintain technical documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and collaborate with hardware, test, and systems engineering
  • Master’s degree or advanced technical certifications.

The Boeing Company's story began in 1916, when American lumber industrialist William E. Boeing founded Pacific Aero Products Company in Seattle, Washington. This venture was sparked by his fascination with airplanes, which he first encountered at the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in 1909. A year later, he acquired a wooden boat manufacturing plant that would become his first airplane factory. Teaming up with U.S. Navy officer Conrad Westervelt, Boeing developed the B&W seaplane. In 1917, the company was renamed Boeing Airplane Company. The early years saw Boeing building 'flying boats' for the Navy during World War I and later supplying trainers, pursuit planes, observation craft, torpedo planes, and patrol bombers to the U.S. military throughout the 1920s and 30s.

The late 1920s marked Boeing's expansion into airmail services, and in 1928, William Boeing formed the Boeing Airplane & Transport Corporation to encompass both manufacturing and airline operations. This was followed by a renaming to United Aircraft and Transport Corporation in 1929 and the acquisition of several aircraft makers, including Pratt & Whitney and Sikorsky Aviation. In 1931, the company consolidated its airline holdings into United Airlines. However, antitrust legislation in 1934 mandated the separation of aircraft manufacturing from air transportation, leading to the dissolution of United Aircraft and Transport. This resulted in the formation of three independent entities: Boeing Airplane Company, United Airlines, and United Aircraft Corporation (later United Technologies). Despite this restructuring and a temporary dip in employment, the looming World War II revived Boeing's fortunes with significant orders for bombers. The company became a major contributor to the Allied war effort, producing iconic aircraft like the B-17 Flying Fortress and B-29 Superfortress. Post-war, Boeing continued its military aircraft production with jets like the B-47 Stratojet and B-52 Stratofortress, while also venturing into the commercial jetliner market with the 707 in 1958. The company officially became The Boeing Company in 1961, reflecting its diversification into fields beyond aircraft, including missiles and space technology. A significant merger with McDonnell Douglas Corporation in 1997 further solidified Boeing's position as a global aerospace leader. Over the decades, Boeing has continued to innovate and expand, moving its corporate headquarters from Seattle to Chicago in 2001, and then to Arlington, Virginia, in 2022.
