Boeing Vancouver is seeking Lead Data Steward, reporting to the Software Development Manager, working out of the Richmond BC office.

Lead Data Steward will be responsible for delivery of cutting-edge aviation data analytics products. As part of an integrated product team the Lead Data Steward will be part of technical team taking responsibility for Data Analysis, Data Maintenance and Data Product Development.

This role will work with portfolio leadership, development teams and stakeholders to establish and drive the implementation, technical strategies and roadmaps for the success of each product and initiative.

This position has been identified as a virtual opportunity and will not require the selected candidate to relocate.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Lead stewardship for Aviation Operations data domains (flight telemetry, flight plans, maintenance, sensors, logs), owning data product roadmaps and delivery.

  • Define and enforce data product contracts: schema, semantics, SLAs, lineage, ownership, quality rules, and access policies.

  • Define and validate end-to-end data flows on Azure Databricks (ingest → transform → publish) to meet Machine Learning (ML) and Business Intelligence (BI) requirements.

  • Establish and operationalize a data quality framework and monitoring (completeness, accuracy, timeliness, schema drift) using tools and automated tests.

  • Drive metadata and catalog governance (business glossary, tags, descriptions, sample queries, contact points) and champion adoption of Unity Catalog or equivalent.

  • Lead change management for schema and feature changes, ensuring reproducibility and minimizing downstream impact to ML/BI assets.

  • Mentor and coordinate cross-functional teams (Data Engineers, Data Scientists, Product Owners, Ops SMEs) to deliver and maintain data products.

  • Oversee data access management and Role Based Access Control (RBAC), ensuring compliance with aviation security, privacy, and regulatory requirements.

  • Define runbooks, incident response procedures, and operational KPIs for data product health and reliability.

  • Act as the primary liaison for stakeholders, prioritizing enhancements, and resolving production escalations quickly.

  • Promote continuous improvement through data profiling, harmonization, enrichment, and automation of manual data tasks.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • 8+ years of experience in data stewardship, data governance, data engineering, or related roles.

  • 2+ years in a senior/lead capacity.

  • 2+ years of experience implementing strategy related to data quality tooling and pipelines.

  • Must be legally able to work in Canada.

  • Individuals must not pose a risk for safeguarding of controlled goods.

  • Must be eligible to handle US export-controlled data.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Prior experience in aviation/flight operations, or working with time-series, telemetry, and sensor datasets

  • Familiarity with ML feature stores, MLOps practices, and ensuring feature lineage and reproducibility

  • Familiarization with Azure Databricks and Delta Lake, including designing transformative jobs, clusters, and job orchestration

  • Familiarization of Bronze/Silver/Gold layering and best practices for feature readiness and ML use cases

  • Understanding of RBAC/IAM on Cloud and managing secure data access in enterprise environments

  • Understanding of cloud ecosystem: Storage, Monitoring and Deployment

  • Understanding of Data distribution ecosystem like Databricks

  • Experience with metadata/catalog tools (preferably Unity Catalog or Alation)

  • Understanding of CI/CD for data pipelines, Git-based workflows, and infrastructure-as-code patterns

  • Excellent stakeholder management, written and verbal communication skills, and ability to translate business needs to technical requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Aviation, or related field or equivalent experience

The Boeing Company's story began in 1916, when American lumber industrialist William E. Boeing founded Pacific Aero Products Company in Seattle, Washington. This venture was sparked by his fascination with airplanes, which he first encountered at the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in 1909. A year later, he acquired a wooden boat manufacturing plant that would become his first airplane factory. Teaming up with U.S. Navy officer Conrad Westervelt, Boeing developed the B&W seaplane. In 1917, the company was renamed Boeing Airplane Company. The early years saw Boeing building 'flying boats' for the Navy during World War I and later supplying trainers, pursuit planes, observation craft, torpedo planes, and patrol bombers to the U.S. military throughout the 1920s and 30s.

The late 1920s marked Boeing's expansion into airmail services, and in 1928, William Boeing formed the Boeing Airplane & Transport Corporation to encompass both manufacturing and airline operations. This was followed by a renaming to United Aircraft and Transport Corporation in 1929 and the acquisition of several aircraft makers, including Pratt & Whitney and Sikorsky Aviation. In 1931, the company consolidated its airline holdings into United Airlines. However, antitrust legislation in 1934 mandated the separation of aircraft manufacturing from air transportation, leading to the dissolution of United Aircraft and Transport. This resulted in the formation of three independent entities: Boeing Airplane Company, United Airlines, and United Aircraft Corporation (later United Technologies). Despite this restructuring and a temporary dip in employment, the looming World War II revived Boeing's fortunes with significant orders for bombers. The company became a major contributor to the Allied war effort, producing iconic aircraft like the B-17 Flying Fortress and B-29 Superfortress. Post-war, Boeing continued its military aircraft production with jets like the B-47 Stratojet and B-52 Stratofortress, while also venturing into the commercial jetliner market with the 707 in 1958. The company officially became The Boeing Company in 1961, reflecting its diversification into fields beyond aircraft, including missiles and space technology. A significant merger with McDonnell Douglas Corporation in 1997 further solidified Boeing's position as a global aerospace leader. Over the decades, Boeing has continued to innovate and expand, moving its corporate headquarters from Seattle to Chicago in 2001, and then to Arlington, Virginia, in 2022.
