What began in 1961 as a heartfelt mission by a small group of parents of eight children with special needs has blossomed into the Association for Individual Development (AID), a cornerstone of support and empowerment in the greater Fox Valley area of Illinois. This journey, fueled by a desire to create lives of dignity and purpose for individuals facing challenges, has seen AID grow from a grassroots initiative into a comprehensive human services organization. Over the decades, AID has expanded its reach and services exponentially, becoming a recognized leader in providing high-quality outcomes in housing, employment, community integration, health promotion, recovery, and crisis prevention. The organization's story is one of continuous adaptation and growth, always with the individual at the center of its focus. From its humble beginnings, AID has consistently sought to break down barriers—personal, societal, and environmental—that hinder individuals from achieving their full potential.

Today, AID serves over 5,000 individuals annually across seven counties, a testament to its unwavering commitment and the profound impact of its work. The organization's evolution is marked by the establishment of numerous community day centers, outpatient clinics, and supportive housing options, including apartments and group homes. This extensive network of facilities and programs ensures that tailored, consumer-focused services are accessible to those who need them most.
