The journey of Anglian Water began under a different guise, born from the Water Act of 1973 which established ten regional water authorities across England and Wales. The Anglian Water Authority was formed to manage the water supply and sewerage services for the vast, and notably dry, East of England. For over a decade and a half, it operated as a public entity, laying the foundational infrastructure for a region that is geographically the largest of any water company in England and Wales. This period was defined by the challenge of serving a sprawling area that stretches from the Humber Estuary down to the Thames Estuary, encompassing some of the UK's most vital agricultural land.

A pivotal transformation occurred in 1989 with the privatisation of the water industry. This event marked the birth of Anglian Water Services Limited as a private company. No longer a government body, the newly formed company embarked on a new chapter, driven by a dual mandate: to deliver reliable water and recycling services to a growing population while operating as a commercial enterprise. This transition unleashed significant investment into the region's water infrastructure. Since 1989, the company has poured billions of pounds into improving services, upgrading treatment works, and laying thousands of kilometres of pipes. Its mission evolved into a purpose-driven strategy encapsulated by the motto 'Love Every Drop', reflecting the unique challenge of operating in the UK's driest region. This commitment was formally embedded in its constitution in 2019, legally binding the company to prioritize environmental and social prosperity alongside shareholder returns. Today, Anglian Water serves almost seven million people, navigating the complex challenges of climate change, population growth, and environmental protection, while planning for a resilient future with major infrastructure projects like new reservoirs and strategic pipelines.
