ALONE

In 1976, Dublin fireman Willie Bermingham and his colleagues made a devastating discovery during the cold winter months - they found the bodies of older people living alone in tenements throughout the city, having died in appalling conditions. Shocked by this tragedy, Willie and a small group of friends and colleagues began distributing food, fuel, and blankets to older people most in need. They also launched a media and government campaign to raise awareness of these 'forgotten old' in Irish society.

Today, ALONE continues its mission as a national organization that enables older people to age happily and securely at home. The charity provides an integrated system of support coordination, practical supports, befriending services, phone services, social prescribing, housing with support, and assistive technology. With over 9,000 volunteers throughout the country, ALONE supports thousands of older people annually, including those who are lonely, isolated, frail or ill, homeless, living in poverty, or facing other difficulties. The organization also campaigns for the rights of older people and advocates for policy changes to improve their quality of life. Throughout Seán Moynihan's tenure as CEO, the number of people supported has grown from 200 to more than 12,000, demonstrating the organization's significant expansion and impact across Ireland.
