The New York Foundling

The story of The New York Foundling begins in 1869, born from a compassionate response to a crisis on the streets of New York City. The Sisters of Charity, witnessing a tragic epidemic of infanticide and abandonment, could no longer stand by. Spearheaded by the determined Sister Mary Irene FitzGibbon, and with the encouragement of Archbishop John McCloskey, a rented house at 17 East 12th Street became a sanctuary. This humble beginning, known as the Foundling Asylum, was a beacon of hope, a place where abandoned infants could find shelter and care. The mission was simple yet profound: to save the lives of the city's most vulnerable children. In its very first month, the asylum took in 45 infants, a testament to the overwhelming need. The early years were marked by innovation driven by necessity, including the creation of the first-ever 'crib' placed outside the door, allowing mothers to leave their babies safely and anonymously, ensuring no child was left to perish.

From these foundational acts of mercy, The New York Foundling has evolved into a comprehensive and dynamic human services organization, though its core principle, 'Abandon No One,' remains unchanged. The journey from a single house in Greenwich Village to a multi-faceted agency serving over 30,000 people annually across New York City and Puerto Rico is a testament to its enduring commitment. The organization's scope has expanded far beyond its original mission, now encompassing a wide array of services that address the complex needs of children, adults, and families. This includes pioneering programs in foster care and adoption, establishing the Mott Haven Academy Charter School specifically for children in the welfare system, and providing extensive support for individuals with developmental disabilities.
