Shaunak Ghosh
@shaunakghosh1
Aspiring software engineer with a focus on machine learning and AI.
What I'm looking for
I am a dedicated computer science student at the University of Maryland, pursuing a B.S. in Computer Science with a minor in Statistics. As a Presidential Scholarship recipient, I have honed my skills in various programming languages and frameworks, including React.js, Node.js, and PyTorch. My academic journey has equipped me with a solid foundation in data structures, algorithms, and machine learning, which I am eager to apply in real-world scenarios.
Currently, I am a Machine Learning Researcher at the RISE Lab, where I developed a ResNet-based convolutional neural network to interpret geologic orientation symbols. This project not only enhanced my technical skills but also taught me the importance of model generalization and data preprocessing. My previous experience as a Software Engineering Fellow at Headstarter allowed me to engineer AI applications and collaborate with industry leaders, further solidifying my passion for software development and innovation.
Experience
Work history, roles, and key accomplishments
Machine Learning Researcher
University of Maryland - RISE Lab
Feb 2025 - Present (3 months)
Built a ResNet-based convolutional neural network using PyTorch to automatically identify and interpret geologic orientation symbols from raster maps, storing results in a vector database. Leveraged ArcGIS Pro to extract and pre-process 2,000 labeled symbols for training, improving model generalization. Trained the model over 400 epochs to accurately determine compass azimuths from detected symbol
Software Engineering Fellow
Headstarter
Jul 2024 - Sep 2024 (2 months)
Engineered AI applications utilizing technologies such as NextJS, OpenAI, Firebase, and StripeAPI. Designed projects from scratch with a team of engineering fellows, focusing on deployment using the MVC pattern. Received mentorship from developers and leaders on business strategies, Git, CI/CD, Agile, and microservice platforms.
Drone Programmer
REC Foundation Aerial Drones Competition World Championship
Aug 2021 - May 2022 (9 months)
Designed, built, and programmed robotic aerial drones for mobility, transitioning concepts into real-world applications. Incorporated project-based learning alongside team members prior to competition. Achieved a modeling and 3D-printing award.
