BEIT graduate who built a real-time ASL alphabet recognition system, using Python and computer vision to achieve 100% accuracy on domain-matched data.
NepalWhat I'm looking for
For my final-year project, I built a real-time ASL alphabet sign language recognition system using Python, OpenCV, MediaPipe, and TensorFlow/Keras. I collected and cleaned 2,600 webcam images and analyzed a 25,565-image benchmark dataset for training and evaluation.
I found that inconsistent hand usage across benchmark classes made a model with 100% test accuracy fail on live webcam input. I implemented wrist-relative normalization to make the model robust to hand position and orientation, achieving 100% accuracy on domain-matched data, and documented the pipeline and findings in a GitHub repository.
