Cam Duong Lai

Full-stack software engineer owning PostgreSQL-to-React features end-to-end with Spring Boot and AWS.
What I'm looking for
I’m a full-stack software engineer with 8 years in the Bay Area, currently at Nutanix. I’m at my best taking a feature end-to-end—from PostgreSQL schema design to a Spring Boot API and a React UI—without handing off between teams.
At Nutanix, I own the subscription management module in the licensing portal, supporting 200+ enterprise accounts at 99.6% uptime. I replaced a synchronous report endpoint with an SQS + Lambda async pipeline, cutting p95 latency from ~11s to under 2s and eliminating monthly timeout-related support tickets.
I also built a RAG-based support assistant (pgvector + GPT-in-a-Box API + Spring Boot) that answers licensing and entitlement questions in plain English, reducing average resolution time from ~15 minutes to under 3 minutes. On the performance side, I fixed the slowest PostgreSQL queries using EXPLAIN ANALYZE and optimizations that dropped average report load from ~7s to under 1.5s—and I was promoted to Software Engineer II in January 2025, ~9 months ahead of the standard timeline.

Work history, roles, and key accomplishments
Owned Nutanix licensing portal subscription management, supporting 200+ enterprise accounts at 99.6% uptime. Improved p95 report latency by replacing a synchronous endpoint with an SQS + Lambda async pipeline (≈11s to <2s), built a RAG-based support assistant that reduced resolution time from ≈15 min to <3 min, and cut report load time from ≈7s to <1.5s by optimizing slow PostgreSQL queries.
Built Zuora’s usage-based billing calculation service from scratch using Spring Boot, Kafka events, and PostgreSQL, powering the consumption-pricing product for 40+ enterprise clients at launch. Owned the invoice configuration module end-to-end across four releases, reduced PostgreSQL query load for subscription catalog by ~40% via JOIN batching and Redis caching, and cut failed-payment reprocessi
Built REST endpoints for subscriber provisioning and configuration sync on Calix’s cloud platform and implemented corresponding UI screens. Resolved 40+ defects across two releases and authored OpenAPI documentation for 8 endpoints, helping shorten onboarding time for two mid-project joiners.
