Role Overview
We are seeking a visionary Director of Digital Archives to lead our digital preservation strategy and ensure the long-term accessibility of our critical digital assets. This role will be essential in shaping the future of our digital archive initiatives, driving innovation, and fostering collaboration across departments to enhance our archival practices.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a comprehensive digital archiving strategy that aligns with institutional goals and best practices in digital preservation.
- Oversee the management and curation of digital collections, ensuring their integrity, accessibility, and compliance with legal and ethical standards.
- Lead a team of archivists and digital preservation specialists, providing mentorship and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.
- Collaborate with IT and other departments to ensure the technical infrastructure supports digital archiving needs, including storage solutions and metadata standards.
- Engage with stakeholders to promote awareness and utilization of digital archives, enhancing the visibility and impact of collections.
- Conduct research and stay abreast of emerging trends in digital archiving and preservation technologies to inform strategic initiatives.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- Master’s degree in Library Science, Archival Science, Information Management, or a related field.
- 7+ years of progressively responsible experience in digital archives management or digital preservation.
- Strong knowledge of archival standards, practices, and technologies, including metadata schemas and digital asset management systems.
- Proven ability to lead and inspire a diverse team, managing projects with multiple stakeholders effectively.
Preferred:
- Experience with cloud-based digital preservation solutions and software.
- Familiarity with grant writing and fundraising for archival projects.
- Certification from a recognized archival organization, such as the Academy of Certified Archivists.
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Expertise in digital asset management systems (DAMS) and preservation tools.
- Proficiency in metadata standards such as Dublin Core, MODS, or PREMIS.
- Experience with digitization technologies and techniques.
- Familiarity with programming languages or scripting for data manipulation and automation (e.g., Python, XML).
